Ideas in Transit was funded as part of the Future Intelligent Transport Systems initiative.

The inititative aimed to address "the challenge of delivering better passenger and freight transport services while at the same time reducing negative environmental impacts especially the carbon footprint." It was launched and sponsored by three major supporters of transport research in the UK:

	Department for Transport
	Technology Strategy Board
